Is there a way to check if the database is corrupted ie could I look at the text back ups? If so what sort of thing should I look for?

I want to check it as I am still having a problem with both Browse&Search and category_trees&Search being really slow where as either search or smartsearch returns instant results even with a * list all.

thanks for any advice or suggestions. ps I already tried backup database, delete and restore.
