Admin->Category Options  set the:

 Homepage Category Columns:

to 1

This will make it one column.

Then edit the Frontpage template, move the body class to your template left or anywhere you want:

Also you can set the category option:

 Home Page Category Teasers Display Mode:

to None

to not display the sub categories under each category.
