As I understand it, the thumbnails on the featured page and gallery are created by the auction software from the first photos uploaded for each item. The only way to make them clearer is to make sure that the first photo uploaded is extremely sharp. If your users are uploading the photos, there's not much you can do other than go into the 'listing' options and make the sizes of the thumbnail pictures larger.
