I prune my auctiions regularly and was wondering why it does not delete the pictures that are used with the associated auctions that the prune function deletes.

It does. You may have items left from older versions but sure it should delete all images and media files uploaded with the item.

Is it safe to delete the pictures that are in the upload folder under auctions/upload after the auctions have been started and they have been converted in the featured gallery and thums images by the software.

Or does the program use images in the upload folder after the auction has started.

You do not need to delete images manually, the images in the upload folder are the ones that show on the view items pages.
